3|362 Days Left {Project 365}

Daylight saving is today and I woke up early because of the extra hour gained.

In honor of daylight saving, here are some fun facts that I didn’t know:

Ben Franklin, who reportedly came up with the idea of changing the clocks (albeit in a joking way), suggested firing cannons at sunrise to make sure sluggish sleepers who couldn’t get with the program got out of bed.

  1. The United States’ internal clock was thrown into chaos in the ’50s and ’60s, when there were no uniform DST rules. For instance, the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul were on different clocks — if you lived in one city and worked in another, it was a bit confusing. And for five weeks each year, Boston, New York and Philly were on different timetables than DC, Cleveland and Baltimore.

  2. Twins that are born during the early-morning fall switchover face an unusual conundrum: Even if one twin is technically born first, the later one might be considered born “first” on paper (Baby A is born at 1:35 a.m., but Baby B is born 30 minutes later, which then reverts to 1:05 a.m. again).

  3. According to the U.S. Law Enforcement Assistance Administration, crime rates go down during daylight saving time.

  4. Palestinian terrorists forgot to take daylight saving time into account while programming the time bombs they wanted to transport into Israel in 1999 — the bombs went off an hour early, killing three terrorists instead of the intended victims.
